Lessons From the Universe.....

I am constantly discussing Intuition with my clients and I may sound like a broken record, but I have
discovered that we have stopped listening to our inner guide and ignore the signs that are blatantly obvious about what we should be doing.  Listening to our inner guide can be as simple as not ignoring the signs that we are hungry and eat before we become a raging bitch or stop eating and push the plate away before we have a Thanksgiving stomach and unbutton our pants.  Our gut will tell is when we are near danger or when something is off kilter and wrong.

I learned a huge lesson from the universe this weekend about listening to my intuition and following my inner guide.

I have a sister that lives nearby here in Florida and her life has been riddled with problems, pain, alcohol and mental issues.  Over the years I have help this sister in EVERY  way possible, money, home, car, support, love, dedication, baby sitting.  I also enabled her because my love for her was so great.  I allowed her to destroy relationships, come between family members, and hurt me endlessly.
I stopped enabling and helping her about 4 years ago.  I made a decision that I could be there to lend an ear and support her through caring and listening, but that was where I stopped.  My amazing wife, not understanding the pain and anguish that she had put me through offered to let her live with us at one point.  My gut instantly got nauseous and I vehemently rejected the idea.  I listened to my inner guide and knew that it was the wrong choice.
Fast forward a year and the reason for this post!! On Saturday I received numerous calls from my sister with anguishing voicemails pleading for help admitting she thought she was having a nervous breakdown.  Finally after much deliberation and hours later I called her back.
While on the phone, I did something bold:  I invited her to stay with us for one month and drive her to work and also help pay to get her car fixed, I told her I would be there on Monday to pick her up.  I hung up and I was at peace with my decision.

I listened to my inner guide and I knew at that moment that my decision was the right one, Right Then.

Of course, Adriane thought I was nuts!!  The following day I sat and had a long discussion with my wife, Adriane, about the situation with my sister.  I explained that I have been working on intuition and following my inner guide, I felt at peace with my decision.  She cried and said her intuition felt completely different and that she could see no good coming from this.

I then did something I have never done before in any previous relationship.

You eat healthy... so is there still room for improvement?

Yesterday I got a call from my sister, Stephanie, who visited me last weekend for 5 days with her husband and 7 month old baby Ava.  She was proud to announce that she had gone home and cleaned out her whole kitchen, threw out the bad foods, and replaced them with healthy choices.  I was ecstatic! Melissa and Ava

This is why I am so happy.  My sister is not unhealthy, she is not overweight, her children eat vegetables and she does generally all around better than many Americans on the Standard American Diet (SAD).  She doesn't drink soda, eat candy bars, or even eat fast food. She is the typical person that says to me I eat healthy, and truly believes that they do. This being said her 5 days staying with me opened her eyes to the many little changes you can make in your everyday life that when added up make a huge difference.  I guess what hit home most was the fact that this is your typical family trying to be healthy, but they lack the tools and education to make all the right decisions.

Now I am not suggesting everyone go home and empty their kitchens and go buy all new food, but I am suggesting that Americans become educated on what are the right foods. We are not asking the right questions, we are not demanding the quality foods we deserve.  People are still drinking super-sized drinks. They are buying in to the ads that foods with commercials are actually as good for you as they say they are!  Do you see advertisements for an apple? No? Why?  Because a company can't make extra money on it unless they process it and stuff it in a box and put a label on it!

It is time we step back and take a look at our food system here in the USA, quit believing the BS the government is trying to shove down our throats with their FDA, large scale farming and mass produced GMO food.  Educate ourselves about what is good for us.  You don't have to change overnight, but start paying attention.  I know you can't stay with me for 5 days and radically change your views in a week so start small and let me help you!

What are some small steps you can do today to start making the shift?

Are you discouraged when you go out to eat? I live in an organic desert

I received this email today from fellow health coach Holli Thompson of Nutritional Style and wanted to share her very important message.  Holli says:

I was beginning to feel that the health advocates of America were making headway; Whole Foods pledged to abolish all GMO's from their stores by 2015, there was a large increase in the number of farmers markets reported, and new organic cosmetic lines are debuting each day.

Then I went on a two week family trip to the southern United States.

It was eye opening. Although I coach my clients week after week about how to travel, and I share ideas and resources and tips for doing it, there's nothing likegetting out there.

Holy moly.

This was not Manhattan, or L.A., where there are dozens of organic restaurants and juice bars. This was not a spa in New Mexico, or a European city, where foods are naturally organic and whole. This was American theme park cuisine, and American resort cuisine, home of iceberg lettuce wedges with gobs of blue cheese dressing.

Yes, like in Modern Family, and yes, my son wanted to try it.

Even though we had a kitchen in our room, and even though I brought packets of VegaOne smoothie mix, it was tough going. I went shopping for groceries so that my husband could have organic eggs, and I found organic mixed greens at Publix, but I wasn't prepared to eat every meal in the room, and neither were my guys.

We tried to visit restaurants with menus that appeared to have clean food, but somehow the green beans were swimming in oil, and the mashed cauliflower
was mostly butter and potatoes. At one hotel, the only late night dining available was pizza, as our exhausted family ordered in dinner.

I didn't see the word "organic" on a menu for two weeks, and everywhere I looked, at each restaurant we visited, there were oversized portions of gluten and dairy, without any vegetables. I gave up battling my son on factory farmed meats and we caved to his vacation diet of cheese-on-everything,

I got discouraged.

I worked hard before hand, bringing organic snacks in my suitcase; raw bars, nuts, and coconut water, and for one week, I cooked breakfast and lunch, which was not really the way I wanted to vacation, by the way.  At some point, we had to get real.

We couldn't run back to the hotel at mid-day. There wasn't a stove in our room, and we wanted to cram in as much fun as possible. Normal splurges, like movie snacks, gave way to daily splurges for my family.

On the way home, my husband turned to me and said, 'I feel sick from the food we've been eating.'

My son said, 'Mama, will you make me a smoothie when we get home?'

I felt like I had lead in my veins, or as my friend the yogi put it, sticky blood.

What struck me was this; this is not a financial issue; the people we saw were paying many hundreds of dollars per family to enter this American theme park. (Watch for my blog this week when I do talk about finances and food in America.)

This is an education issue.

People aren't asking for organic greens or hormone free meats for their kids. They're not insisting that the average nice restaurant carry organic vegetables, or that they prepare their food in healthy oil. They're not demanding healthier snacks, or natural sugars at places that cater to children, and Americans are still buying super-size sodas and trans fat popcorn to watch Oz, the Great and Powerful.

They're not asking for better food, organic food, because they don't want to believe the their food can be that bad. They want to eat what's there, available and accessible, and they don't want to have to search it out, or bring it with them.

Why should they?

They trust that their government agencies protect them, and they believe that somehow, in America, the food must be good for you.

They choose not to believe the articles they read, and they think large scale farming and GMOs provide cheap food for all.  They don't realize the long term health costs of heavy spraying and they've gotten used to seeing people carrying an extra 40 + pounds.

This is not an appearance issue, these are issues that do and will affect all of us in the future.

I am more than determined to get the word out!

Deadly Aspartame MAY be allowed in your DAIRY Unlabeled

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) has recently petitioned the FDA to allow apartame in over 17 dairy products WITHOUT it being labeled.  This means you the consumer could purchase and consume a dairy product and be getting a deadly poison at the same time and not even know it!

I am a full advocate of labeling ALL ingredients in food.  I have written previously about the danger's of GMO's in our food supply, but this takes things to a whole new level and I'm pissed! You all may ask why I'm so mad when I don't even eat or drink regular DAIRY products? As some of you know I use raw dairy from a local Florida farm only.  Why?  Because I know others do! My clients drink milk, my friends love cheese, and they serve it in EVERY school in America!  I care about the health and welfare of my fellow citizens, family, and friends!

So why the hell do they want to add aspartame to milk? Well if you want to understand a little more of their twisted phylosophy Dr. Mercola explains it in his article "Big Dairy Petitions FDA to Allow Unlabeled Use of Aspartame in Dairy Products "

According to the IDFA and NMPF, nutrient content claims such as “reduced calorie” are not attractive to children and have led to an overall decline in milk consumption in schools. Essentially, as with the GMO labeling issue, they don’t want you or your child to be “confused” or perhaps “scared away” by truthful labeling...

The IDFA and NMPF actually maintain that “consumers can more easily identify the overall nutritional value of milk products that are flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners if the labels do not include such claims.”
They also state that consumers generally don’t recognize milk — including flavored milk — as necessarily containing sugar. Therefore, since you’re don’t realize that flavored milk might contain added sugar, sweetening the product with non-nutritive artificial sweeteners, while listing it as simply “milk” on the label, will make it easier for you to identify its overall nutritional value.
Get it? If not, you’re not alone.
In order to understand this twisted logic, you need to know that the FDA alreadyallows the dairy industry to use the unmodified “milk” label for products that contain added sugar or high fructose corn syrup.2

Artificial sweeteners are allowed to be added, but must currently be listed on the label. Quoting Section 130.10 of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, the IDFA and NMPF claim no extra labeling is required for artificial sweeteners because sugar is added to milk without labeling it, and “the modified food is not inferior in performance,” and “reduced calories are not attractive to children.”
Therefore marketing products as such is neither of benefit or detriment to anyone... Knowing that nutritive sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup can be added without being listed as an ingredient, is it any wonder that people generally “don’t recognize” these products contain added sugar?
Going along with their twisted reasoning, since they don’t have to tell you there’s HFCS in that flavored milk or yoghurt — which leaves you ignorant of the fact that it’s there — it might “confuse” you were they to tell you another version contains an artificial sweetener. It also puts those products at a market disadvantage, since the HFCS-containing products don’t have to list it — the HFCS is simply hidden as part of the “milk” designation.
Hence, hiding ALL added sweeteners from you would “promote honesty” and “fair dealing in the marketplace.” Not only is this a perfect example of how you may be consuming hidden fructose in your diet, even if you are an avid label reader... it’s also a valuable lesson in just how little you’re allowed to know about the foods you buy.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?  TAKE ACTION NOW!!  Sumbit a comment on the proposed rule and let government know it's NOT ok!

Athletes Listen UP! Want to fight inflammation from training? Try this Super Spice: The ancient secrets of Ayurveda

Super Spice............. Turmeric

People are always questioning me about the supplements I take and what I use for performance enhancement!  Well this super spice is great for MANY reasons, but it has some extra special qualities that may be of interest to athletes, or anyone that works out hard and is looking for that extra edge!  Reduce inflammation and recover faster. So what exactly is this yellow spice and what can it do for you?
Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurvedic medicine. It was first used as a dye and then later for its possible medicinal properties. This mildly woody spice is a key ingredient in many Indian, Persian, and Thai dishes. Turmeric is widely used in cooking and gives Indian curry its flavor and yellow color. It is also used in mustard and to color butter and cheese. Besides its use as a spice in cooking, turmeric has been used in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive and liver problems, skin diseases, and wounds. The active ingredient, curcumin, is so powerful that it is commonly made into expensive nutraceutical capsules. “Curcumin is a complete well-being tonic – it benefits every organ in the body… It shows promise of fighting nearly every disease.” says Dr. Ajay Goel, director of Epigenetics and Cancer Prevention at Baylor Research Institiute in Dallas. He suggests that curcumin aids in prevention of all sorts of diseases including Alzheimer',s, Parkinson's, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and depression.

So what makes this amazing spice great for the athlete too? Curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants scavenge molecules in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Antioxidants can fight free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause. In addition, curcumin lowers the levels of two enzymes in the body that cause inflammation. It also stops platelets from clumping together to form blood clots.

1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.

2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.

3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.

4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.

5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.

6. Is a natural liver detoxifier.

7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.

8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.

9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.

10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.

11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.

12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management. Curcumin Speeds Up Metabolism: USDA research shows that is enhances cellular energy to speed metabolism.

13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.

14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.

16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.

17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.

18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.

19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.

20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

My FAVORITE way to get extra Turmeric into my diet is in a healthy, cleansing tea!!!

Are you STARVING Yourself?? I DID

Ok so I have to just write a quick post in response to an email I received today.  As you know I have been doing classes about Adrenal Fatigue and Thyroid Disease.  I explained that I ended up with these conditions because I was on a restrictive diet without properly nourishing foods and then training sometimes 3 or 4 hours in a day to compete in the sport of Figure.
Well maybe I wasn't clear!  So to put it bluntly I was STARVING myself.  I was starving myself physically and this caused so many problems, both physical and mental.  I would binge on foods on the weekend and then throw them up because I was scared of the "calories", I would hide in my kitchen in the middle of the night and just stare into my refrigerator and cupboards and long for food.  I would CRY in the middle of the night because I was hungry!!!  All in the name of a sport!  All in the name of looking good!  Was I still healthy?  HELL NO!!  Was all the supplements I was taking to keep my energy up good for me?  Hell no!

So what the heck happened?  I will tell you!  I stopped eating 1000 to 1200 calories a day.  My body went into animal mode, it was survival (unfortunately my body doesn't know I was just dieting for 3 years for competitions it thought I was on a 4 year hike in the middle of no man's land and that the strike was over) and once food became unrestrictive and available I ATE EVERYTHING for MONTHS and MONTHS.  The only reason I only gained 15 pounds was because at the same time I was allowing myself to eat whatever I wanted I would only have the best foods in my house.  The most quality veggies, fruits, meats, fats, etc!  I was also doing protocol to heal my thyroid condition and get rid of my adrenal fatigue.  Now that I am back to my natural, healthy weight I look great, dropped some of the unwanted extra pounds and know I will never again go on a DIE-T why?  Because next time I may DIE!  If you are starving yourself in the name of health STOP IT NOW!!!!  I do not count calories (I don't believe in it!) but if I did I would probably say its double what my starvation diet was!  I feel better than I ever did before and I look damn good too!!  Make a commitment to yourself. Start with this:

Dearest Body of Mine,
After careful and thoughtful consideration,
I hereby promise to:
Listen to you with open ears and be aware of your aches and pains.
Love you for who you are and what you have already done
Accept that you are not perfect and that you have flaws
Feed you properly and no longer yo-yo diet, binge, purge or otherwise neglect you
Overcome the addictions that harm you.
Exercise regularly but also know when to relax
Heal you through knowledge and nutrition
Understand that my thoughts affect you
I love you

Adrenal Fatigue: What is it? Do You Have it?

Adrenal Fatigue is a health disorder that is continuously misdiagnosed and widely ignored in the medical community. Adrenal fatigue can affect anyone especially those that experience constant stress.  It is estimated that nearly 80% of people will experience adrenal fatigue at some point in their lives.

So why is this important?

I know a lot of people living with varying degrees of adrenal fatigue.  I see clients every day that have no energy, are always tired and run down, and can't figure out why they are having health and weight issues. This is important because we want to feel as sexy on the inside as we want to look on the outside!

Well let's first start with the adrenal glands!  These small pyramid shaped glands are responsible for helping with the production of over 50 hormones!  The powerhouses produce hormones that help us deal with STRESS! They produce the hormone adrenaline, and also make DHEAs, cortisol, testosterone, and estrogen to name a fewThey also are important in your immune function, regulating your body temperature, and keeping blood sugar levels stable.

If they are out of whack, you usually feel extreme exhaustion that never budges, lethargic, dizzy, depressed, and weak. To make matters worse, you may even incur allergies, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, and abnormal body temperatures. This exhaustion is puts undue stress on our bodies. Biochemically, stress does things in the body that eventually lead to the breakdown of tissue or to a dramatic disturbance in hormonal function.

Because of this, many of our modern disease patterns are heavily related to the stress in our lives and how we manage it. These are common disorders, like:

· Obesity
· Diabetes
· Heart disease
· Autoimmune disorders like celiac disease, hypothyroidism, and rheumatoid arthritis
· Gut disorders, like irritable bowl syndrome
· Hormonal imbalance, such as irregular menses or possibly infertility

Adrenal Fatigue can lead you down a path of destruction and cause many issues.  I had Adrenal Fatigue when I was a figure competitor and eventually it turned into hypothyroidism.  I was prescribed drugs to cover the situation. I had gained weight, was eating less to compensate and training more and harder, my coach thought I must not be following the "plan".  I was tired, miserable and ill.  I finally got fed up and knew I couldn't take it anymore.  I had damaged my metabolism, my thyroid, my entire body so I decided to heal myself holistically. It has taken me a couple years, but thankfully I am well and not on any prescription medications!
I no longer have hypothyroidism and my metabolism is finally working again.  It can be done!  If you would like to listen to my recent Teleclass about Adrenal Fatigue you can call 626-677-3003 Access Code 627373

Food Focus: Sweet Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are on everyone's mind this season. Cravings for sweets can be greatly reduced by adding sweet vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, yams, parsnips, beets, squash, turnips and rutabagas to your daily diet. Sweet potatoes elevate blood sugar gently rather than with the jolt delivered by simple refined carbohydrates, so there's no energy crash after you eat them. Much higher in nutrients than white potatoes and especially rich in vitamin A, sweet potatoes offer a creamy consistency that is satisfying and soothing. They are healing to the stomach, spleen, pancreas and reproductive organs and help to remove toxins from the body. They can increase the quantity of milk in lactating women and can lessen cramps and premenstrual symptoms. If you don't have any sweet potatoes in your kitchen, go out and buy some (organic and local if possible) and make the recipe on my website. Baked Caraway Sweet Potato with Rosemary

Melissa

What about that Resolution?
Renewal

A lot of people begin the New Year by making resolutions. We've all been there. We take a vow to lose weight, exercise more or spend more time with our family. We start the year with great intentions, but then we quickly relapse into old habits. Why is it so hard to stick to those New Year's resolutions?
Here are some ways you can make your intentions a reality this year:
  1. Write down your intentions and keep them in a visible place, like taped to your bedroom mirror or the dashboard of your car.
  2. Get to the source of whatever is keeping you in a rut. Are you in a stressful relationship that causes you to eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's every night? Are you stressed at your job and feel too tired to exercise after work?  If you don't tackle the root of the behavior, it will be much harder to accomplish your goal.
  3. Be clear about what your life would look like once you achieve your goal. If you resolve to go to the gym more, how will this benefit you? Get connected to the result of your action, and you will be more likely to stick with your plan.
  4. Share your resolutions with friends and family. Hold each other accountable for achieving your goals. If you want to go to the gym more, have a friend call you two or three times a week to check on you or invite them to join you.
  5. Reward yourself with every little accomplishment. If your intention is to lose weight and you lose 1 pound a week, pamper yourself with a massage.
Big changes do not require big leaps. Permanent change is more likely to happen gradually than through one big restrictive plan. Allow yourself to climb the ladder one rung at a time.

If you need help reaching these goals you can join one of my Group Health Programs!  You will get amazing support and accountability!  I am offering a live class in Fort Lauderdale and also an amazing TELECLASS Live stream from you living room!

Happy New Year!

Class #2: Thyroid and Your Metabolism. What is the real cause of your weight gain?

Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight, low energy, fatigue and foggy thinking - these are all classic symptoms associated with an under-functioning thyroid gland. In addition, low thyroid function can cause dry skin, hair loss, chronic constipation, depression, high cholesterol, low body temperature, high blood pressure and water retention. Many people are aware of this and will report to me that they have had their doctor check their thyroid values and their blood work came back normal from the lab. They receive no treatment, despite the fact that they go on experiencing these symptoms.
